Specialty E-Care Management Sites: Creating Communities in Cyberspace. What Role Will These Sites Play in the Over-All Disease Management Picture? Will They Add Value? Will They Endure Financially?
Monday, September 18, 2000 4:15pm
Presentation Materials

J. Joseph Prendergast has been a practicing diabetologist for nearly 30 years. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine as well as Endocrinology and Metabolism.

Dr. Prendergast has published 31 medical articles in well-known publications such as The Journal of the American Medical Association, The New England Journal of Medicine, and Diabetes Care. In 1986, Dr. Prendergast formed a single specialty endocrinology practice, and he founded a non-profit research foundation. Both are currently active. He is the Medical Director for DiabetesWell, heading up the DiabetesWell Program in Atherton, California.

Why Dr. Prendergast Started the DiabetesWell Program

"Anyone familiar with diabetes knows that it can be a devastating disease. Its complications can include blindness, kidney disease, amputation, stroke, and neurological problems. But it can be managed successfully with appropriate treatment.
"I began the DiabetesWell program to refine and extend to a broader public the procedures I had found to be successful in my own practice. It was also a way to bring to those with diabetes the advantages of new technologies."

Patient empowerment is probably the most philosophically exciting idea to emerge in medicine in recent years. Patients can, and must, be educated to play the primary role in maintaining their own health. I have seen it work and have had the great satisfaction over the past 29 years of helping thousands of individuals live full and active lives."
