AGENDA: MINI PRECONFERENCE SYMPOSIA
Sunday, February 26, 2012

Preconference is optional; requires separate registration.

MINI PRECONFERENCE I: OUTCOMES MEASUREMENT FOR DUMMIES...AND SMARTIES
1:00 p.m. Preconference Commences

A follow-up to the very well-received 2010 Colloquium keynote of the same title, this session is a much more in-depth look at outcomes measurement for medical homes, disease management and wellness. You'll learn why "pre-post" approaches will always overstate savings, how to create valid study design, and how to apply "plausibility tests" to ensure valid results. This session leads to the (optional) Critical Outcomes Report Analysis (CORA) test and certification, the "gold standard" credential in care management metrics. The CORA test may be taken immediately following this session or on a take-home basis. (Separate registration for the test required.)

Al Lewis
President, Disease Management Purchasing Consortium International, Inc.; Founder and Past President, Disease Management Association of America, Wellesley, MA

Attendees will receive a free e-copy of the presenter's upcoming book Why Nobody Believes the Numbers: The Outcomes Measurement Guide for Grown-Ups.
2:45 p.m. Adjournment

MINI PRECONFERENCE II: NORTH CAROLINA MEDICAID MEDICAL HOMES: THE NUMBERS DON'T ADD UP, PERIOD
3:00 p.m. Preconference Commences

Oftentimes a study showing a dramatic result can be questioned. Rarely if ever, can it simply be unequivocally proven wrong, as NC Medicaid can. It's a case study of how medical homes can "show savings" -- dramatic savings in this case -- by using invalid trend assumptions and other study design techniques, when the actual statistics yield the opposite conclusion definitively. The session will also offer attendees some techniques for valid PCMH outcomes measurement, to avoid such validity challenges in your own organization.
