PRECONFERENCE: POPULATION HEALTH MANAGEMENT PROJECTS: BEST PRACTICES FROM ACROSS THE USA (Registration optional; Required for Population Health Training Program)

Integrated delivery systems and large medical groups are struggling to adapt to the evolving focus on population health management. This preconference session will share how 3 very different entities are making it work: a Midwest academic medical center that implemented a $12 million Medicare/Medicaid Innovation grant to improve rural cardiovascular health; a state medical society that developed cutting-edge antibiotic stewardship programs; and a West Coast community's program to combat childhood obesity.

    Speaker Bio

    Dr. Kent Bottles teaches health policy and payment reform at The Thomas Jefferson University College of Population Health in Philadelphia, is Chief Medical Officer of PYA Analytics, and a Consulting Principal at Pershing Yoakley and Associates. He has been a Professor and Chair of academic medical school pathology departments, a Chief Medical Officer of a state-wide integrated delivery system, a President and CEO and DIO of an educational and research collaborative in Grand Rapids, Michigan, a President and CEO of an evidence-based medicine health care consortium in Minneapolis, and a President and Chief Knowledge Officer of a genomics bio-tech start-up company in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

James Michael Keegan, MD
Principal, PYA, Knoxville, TN

    Speaker Bio

    Dr. James Michael Keegan is an infectious disease specialist with more than 25 years of experience in the medical field and serves as the Firm's Antibiotic Stewardship Program Service Line Leader. Throughout his career of practicing medicine, Dr. Keegan has taken an active role in improving the quality of healthcare and patient outcomes by serving in numerous medical director and hospital executive leadership positions. Dr. Keegan has taken special interest in solving the negative impact of the overreliance on broad-spectrum antibiotics and has designed and implemented numerous and successful antibiotic stewardship programs (ASPs) that have shown to reverse the incidence of drug-resistant bacteria.

    David B. Nash, MD, MBA is the Founding Dean of the Jefferson School of Population Health where he is the Dr. Raymond C. and Doris N. Grandon Professor of Health Policy. He is a board certified internist and is internationally recognized for his work in outcomes management, medical staff development and quality-of-care. He has authored more than 100 articles in major journals, edited 22 books, and is editor-in-chief of four major national journals.

    Peter Richard Orszag is an American economist who will join Lazard as Managing Director and Vice Chairman in May 2016. He previously served as a Vice Chairman of Corporate & Investment Banking and Chairman of the Financial Strategy & Solutions Group at Citigroup, Inc. He is also a Nonresident Senior Fellow in Economic Studies at the Brookings Institution and a Contributing Columnist at Bloomberg View.

Earl Pomeroy
Senior Partner, Alston & Bird, LLP; Former Member (D/ND), US House of Representatives (1993 -2011), Washington, DC

    Speaker Bio

    Earl Pomeroy has been involved in health policy issues for 35 years. As a young state legislator, he was at the forefront of North Dakota's efforts to enact one of the country's first high risk pools. As the state's Insurance Commissioner and President of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, he advanced small group market reforms and consumer protections for Medicare Supplement and Long Term Care insurance. In the course of his nine terms in Congress, he served on the Health Subcommittee of the Ways and Means Committee and played important roles in the enactment of President Bush's Medicare prescription drug coverage initiative and President Obama's Affordable Care Act.

    In 2011, Earl joined the health policy practice at the Alston & Bird law firm in Washington, DC, where he principally works on issues involving health care reimbursement and insurance.

    Bill Copeland is the Vice Chairman, U.S. Life Sciences and Health Care Industry Leader for Deloitte LLP, covering life sciences, health care provider and health plan practices. A 27-year veteran with Deloitte, Bill has advised many of the market leaders in the health care industry on their most strategic and transformative events, including mergers, affiliations, new business initiatives and financial and operational turnaround plans. He has also led projects around corporate governance and new management processes that link strategy to metrics and board oversight. During his career, Bill has served more than 50 health plans in 40 different markets.

    Dr. Jaewon Ryu joined Humana as Segment Vice President and President of Integrated Care Delivery. Prior to joining Humana, he was at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System, where he was the Chief Medical Officer of a system including a tertiary care academic medical center, its affiliated clinics, seven health sciences colleges (Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Dentistry, Public Health, Applied Health, and Social Work), and among the largest teaching programs associated with these clinical practices. Dr. Ryu brings expertise in developing health system strategy and leading operational implementation across many areas.

    Allyson Y. Schwartz is President & CEO of the Better Medicare Alliance, the leading national advocacy coalition of nurses, doctors, health plans, business and retiree organizations, as well as beneficiaries who support Medicare Advantage.

    Allyson Y. Schwartz, a member of U.S. House of Representatives, 2005-2015, is a nationally recognized leader on health care. A former health care executive, Schwartz served in the Pennsylvania State Senate.

    A strong advocate for Medicare, Schwartz is effective, thoughtful leader, known for her ability to find innovative solutions to health care coverage, quality and cost.

    Schwartz has MSW from Bryn Mawr College and B.A. Simmons College.
